Installation Instructions
This kernel update guide is for users using MCR 2.8/2.9/3.0 & Generics to apply the 1.91 update
You can update MCR 2.8, 2.9 and 3.0 or Generic with the latest 1.91 kernel update.
Requirements:
- An HTC Hero (not the Sprint hero, the EU original Hero)
- Patched recovery menu (Look at step 1 below for instructions)
- MCR 2.8 or newer (Look at step 2 below for instructions) or a Generic ROM as of v 1.9
- Again, you need an unlocked phone (Anyway, if you have MCR 2.8 or newer you are ok to go).
If you are already running Paul's MoDaCo custom ROM skip to Step 3 (you should already have a Recovery Image installed)
If using a Generic ROM you can start at Step 1 and skip Step 2.
Note: If you already have MCR, please make sure you uninstall SWAPPER as it has no real benefit with this kernel update
and is known to can cause trouble (read on the forums @ MoDaCo)
Step 1: First install the "patched recovery image" on your device
- I highly recommend the excellent Amon RA-Hero’s recovery image - Instructions and files are located here on MoDaCo's forums
- Reboot after install
- Using the Recovery Image (hold the [HOME] button while powering on the device) do a nandroid backup asap !
Step 2: Download and Install Paul's excellent MoDaCo Custom ROM
(You will be using the "recovery image" installed on Step 1 to udpate the ROM)
- Instructions and files are located here on MoDaCo's forums
- Basically you download the Core file, copy to the root of your mounted SD-CARD Fat32 partition
- Boot into "recovery menu" (Turn on device holding the [HOME] button until you see the menu)
- First do a Nandroid backup in case something fails
- Choose "SDCARD:Apply any zip" menu
- Select the MCR 2.9 ROM zip file you just copied to your SD-CARD
- Follow onscreen instructions and be patient
- Reboot after install
Step 3: After you confirmed MCR 2.8 or newer or your Generic ROM works fine for you, upgrade to my latest kernel update
- Download the latest kernel update zip file from here (Select the correct update flavor: Modaco Custom ROM or Generic ROM)
- Copy it to the root of your mounted SD-CARD Fat32 partition
- Unmount the SD-CARD and Turn off your Hero using the turn off menu
- Boot into "recovery menu" as in Step 2
- You may do a nandroid backup if you wish.
- Choose "SDCARD:Apply any zip" menu
- Select the kernel update file you just downloaded from this site and copied to your SD-CARD
- Follow on screen instructions
- Reboot
- Enjoy !
If everything goes well you should be able to go to [MENU] Settings/ About Phone
and see this for kernel version:

Actual kernel version should reflect the one you have installed (i.e.: 1.91 if you have installed 1.91 !)
